B.J.
Lynch, photography from 1924 to 1946
My
father was a keen photographer who travelled with both the Merchant
Navy and the Royal Air Force. Joe (as he was known in the forces)
is portrayed in the first and the final shot. While he kept his negatives
carefully filed, he probably saw very few of them printed as he died
prematurely in 1953. As far as possible the shots are presented in
chronological order.
Over
the years he used several different camera formats, including an Autographic,
a 6x9 and a 6x4.5 folder, as well as 35mm cameras. There is some variation
in the quality of the films used and the condition of the negatives.
These shots have been prepared using Epson and Minolta scanners. In
a few cases adjustments have been made for exposure, but the negatives
are otherwise untouched.
Early
shots in the series include the west coast of Scotland, Manchester,
Oslo and the fjiords, the south Atlantic and the Panama Canal. The
majority were taken in Egypt and Sudan, and others in Kenya and Greece.
Aircraft include the Vickers Vincent, Vickers Valentia, Vickers Wellesley,
Bristol Blenheim, and Short Sunderland.
